The Hill Historical Society was formed in 1982, and incorporated in January
of 1987. Among our activities are collecting and preserving local historical
records and making them accessible to everyone, old-time residents, newcomers,
and anyone else with an interest in the history of Hill. We also sponsor
meetings, papers, and discussions both on our own and in cooperation with state and
other local history organizations. Another of our particular interests is in
the preservation of historic buildings, monuments and markers. In short, our
purpose is to promote understanding of the history of our community, state and
nation and to promote appreciation of our American heritage
Archives and CollectionsOrganizing the Archives started in 1984. It was decided to restrict our collections to ephemera and objects that were closely connected to our town. Photographs, maps, old town records, letters, writings, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and research files predominate. The archives also contain extensive digital files including: local newspaper columns from ca 1870 to 1927, real estate deeds complete to 1920, Town tax inventories from 1790’s to 1930 along with certian other Town records, misc. census, probate, journals etc. Town Meeting House, Hill CenterBy far the most ambitious project of the Hill Historical Society has been the renovation of the Town Meeting House in Hill Center. This building had been the site of town meetings from 1848 to 1914.In March of 1986 a resolution was passed at Town Meeting that allowed the Society to claim the building as its new home. The Society began a fund drive in 1989 that raised some $30,000 entirely from local residents and friends. With this money and more than 900 hours of volunteer work, the building has been renovated. The entire roof and floor system were rebuilt, new windows and doors installed, an archival area with necessary temperature controls set aside, electric lighting established throughout, and the north (front) wall returned as closely as possible to the original facade of the building as it appeared in 1848. The large main room serves as meeting hall and museum. Becoming a MemberIf you are interested in becoming a member of the Hill Historical Society, we welcome you!
