3.  From the Centre Harbor Historical Society, Center Harbor:

Thurs., July 24, 7pm.   Loons of New Hampshire.  Join biologist Harry Vogel from the Loon Center of Moultonboro as he talks bout this unique symbol of NH's wild lakes and its special place in the hearts of NH residents.  Free.  Schoolhouse Museum, 94 Dane Rd. 4.  From the Historical Society of Cheshire County, Keene:

Wyman Tavern Museum Now Open, Thurs-Sat 11am-4pm (through Aug. 30).  Built by Capt. Isaac Wyman in 1762 and one of Keene's most historic structures, it was operated by the Wyman Family for 40 years as a stopping point for coaches, carriages and travelers on horseback. Free/member;$3/nonmember.  338 Main St., Keene.

 

Keene Art Association Members to Demonstrate Painting.  In conjunction with the exhibit "The Monadnock Palette:  Celebrating 50 Years of Community Art," painting demonstrations will take place on Sat., July 12 & 26 and Thurs., July 17 & 31 at 10am.  On the HSCC lawn, weather permitting, or in the Exhibit Hall.  Free and open to the public.  Art activities for children available during the demonstrations.

5.  From the Gilmanton Historical Society:

Sat., July 12, 2:00pm.  Fashion Show.  By "Wholly Tara."  Fashions for ladies of all ages.

7. From the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society:

 

Wed., July 16, 7pm.  Winnipesaukee Wednesday:  The Lady of the Lake, River Queen of Winnipiseogee."   The arrival of steampower and the railroad in the mid-1800s, along with the resulting boom in commerce, prompted construction of the Lady of the Lake, the first successful steamboat on Winnipiseogee Lake.  Ship Modeler David Warren from Melvin Village will discuss the fascinating history of the Lady, from her charter in 1848 to her final rest at the bottom of Glendale Bay in 1895.  His recently created model of this steamer is now on display. Free. 

 

Mondays 6-8pm.  Cruise Nights.  Classic and antique cars, car clubs, and car enthusiasts are invited to the 4 acre historic property every Monday evening.  Driver door prizes, music, giveaways, entertainment, 50/50 raffle to benefit LWHS.  Registration not required.  Free. 

 

Sat., July 26 & Sun., July 27, 10am-5pm.  2nd Annual Weirs Arts & Crafts Festival.  100 artisans, crafters and other vendors, including food and music, on the 4 acre historic property. Free.  Rain or Shine.  A Castleberry Fairs & Festivals production.

8.  From the Meredith Historical Society:

Tues., July 1, 7:30pm.   Native American History of NH.  Presented by David Stewart-Smith, PhD., New England Tribal History.  Hear about the area's native people of the 17th and 18th centuries.  A NH Humanities Council program.  Free and open to the public. 9.  From the New Hampton Historical Society:

Tues., July 1.  NHHS Annual Meeting & Pot Luck Supper.  Hike on Carter Mountain to the homestead of Moses Carter, one of New Hampton's first settlers and father of the fabled Levi Carter. Departs 4:00pm from the home of NHHS President Bob Curry and Executive Board Member Carole Curry, with meeting at 5:00pm at the Curry home.  All members and future members welcome to attend.  To coordinate food, please call Carole at 744-9798 currywalk@aol.com

Tuesday Night Summer Lecture Series.  July 1:  Ernie Pyle & the Story of a Lost Photograph.  July 8:  The Other Navy:  The Fleet Auxiliaries of WWII.  July 15:  Medical Care on the Battlefield during WWII.  July 22:  Curious George's Flight from Nazi Germany.  July 29:  Making the Case for Sacrifice on the WWII Home Front.All Tuesday evening lectures begin at 7pm; doors open at 6pm so attendees may tour the museum galleries.  Free for members; $5/nonmembers.   Space is limited; RSVP.

WORKSHOPS, RESOURCES & GENERAL INTEREST

 

The Henniker Historical Society has begun a new program for Boston Post Cane recipients to receive a replica cane to keep for their own that is engraved with the recipient's name and the date of recognition as Henniker's oldest citizen.  The original cane is stored in the town safe and the recipient gets to have his/her picture taken with Selectmen at the presentation ceremony. HHS bought several as a minimum order was required and is offering them for sale to any other society to start a program in their town.  Call Martha Taylor at 428-7037 or at momtay@mcttelecom.com

 

The Laconia Historical & Museum Society is hosting the following workshops:

 

Genealogy Workshop on Sat., July 12, 9:30-11am.  Learn how to trace your ancestors using local resources.  $10/nonmembers; Free/LHMS members.   

 

Preserving Your Heritage Workshop.  Wed., July 16, 12noon-2:00pm.  Care and display of family photographs and documents. $15/member, $25/nonmembers.  Register by July 9.

 

PastPerfect Users Get Together. Wed., July 23, 12noon-2pm at Laconia Public Library's auditorium.  Bring a lunch.  This meeting provides a forum for sharing suggestions, thoughts and complications about the database with peers in an effort to help each other out.  Space limited to 15 people.  RSVP.

Gravestone Restoration Workshop to be held in the North Cemetery, Maplewood Ave., Portsmouth on Sat., July 12 9am-4pm.  Will cover a number of restoration techniques by professional gravestone conservator and monument mason Jonathan Apelle.  including proper techniques for cleaning gravestones, resetting monuments, break repairs and conservation.   $10 per person donation appreciated. RSVP http://www.portsmoutholdgraves.org/rsvp or contact Judy Nerbonne at 436-8439.
