Winter Happenings at Peterborough Historical Society
As the season grows cold, warm up to history at the Peterborough Historical Society museum! This winter’s exhibit offerings will warm the hearts of young and old alike. Through January 13, the museum features a display of vintage 20th century Christmas decorations. Bubble lights, antique cards and ornaments, and a rotating aluminum Christmas are sure to bring back memories. The display was created by Paul Kachinsky of Rindge and features selections from his extensive personal collection. Kachinsky, a collector and dealer of vintage holiday memorabilia, owns The Royalston Attic, a business devoted to preserving and sharing holidays past.
The Historical Society’s featured winter exhibit, Play in the Past, will run through March 2007. Play in the Past highlights the Society’s antique toys, dolls, games, and toy soldiers. The exhibit includes blocks, puzzles, games, and other hands-on activities for families to enjoy. Children can play old-fashioned games and make a rag doll or jumping man to take home with them. The Society’s Education Coordinator Carrie Whittemore designed the family activities which are appropriate for ages 4 to 12.
The Peterborough Historical Society’s museum and archives are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge; adult admission is $3. Admission includes Play in the Past, the vintage Christmas display, as well as the Society’s other exhibit rooms. Please note the museum and archives will be closed from December 24 through January 8.
The Historical Society is located at 19 Grove Street in the heart of historic downtown Peterborough. For directions call 924-3235 or visit our website at http://www.peterboroughhistory.org.
